As my final piece in my concentration I drew my left skate. Figure skating is a central part of my life so I knew all year that I wanted to draw something related to it, I just never figured out what. In previous years I had drawn my favourite figure skaters but this time I wanted to draw something a little more personal. So I drew my skate. I chose my left skate in particular since I jump and spin in the opposite direction from the majority. This is the skate that has the most scratches and marks from my blades. The markers we use to draw on the ice for teaching the classes of little kids stains the laces and the toe of the skate. I think it shows the most of who I am as a skater and coach. I didn’t originally intend for this piece to be as colourful as it ended up being but where I photographed my skate had brightly coloured objects that reflected in the blade and I liked it enough to keep the drawing like that. So instead of confining myself to a certain colour, I added any and every colour I saw in the blades. I went in afterwards with a dark brown, I chose this because its my darkest, neutral, non-black colour, and outlined it; something else that is unique to this piece. Once again I went for the bigger picture and brought out details on the blade and simplified the laces. Although it was originally intended for my concentration, I was hesitant to include it because it ended up nothing like the artist I based it on’s style. However, I kept it in to showcase my development with this concentration. I really the effect I achieved with this piece and am proud of the end result.
